Why do I like 3D?
I’ve always preferred 3D animated media over live action because I feel like there’s more room for creativity in terms of visuals that live action struggles to provide. For example, in an animated movie, characters can have exaggerated facial expressions and movements, and it’ll usually look pretty good depending on what genre it is.
A movie with a more serious story that has these exaggerated movements might look weird as it doesn’t really contribute to the tone of the story whereas a story with a lighthearted or comedic story will benefit more from exaggerated elements. Another advantage of 3D is stylization.
There are so many art styles that exist which make movies or shows stand out from each other.
In live action stuff, having exaggerated elements might be more tricky to do since they’ll usually have to aim for realism. I can think of action movies and superhero movies when it comes to realistic VFX and/or CGI.
Where do I get my ideas from?
I draw inspiration from a mix of everyday life, my cultural background, and the media I love.
– Everyday life: I’m constantly observing the world around me, architecture, clothing, landscapes, and small visual details. I photograph anything that catches my eye, and I use it to build a personal visual library.
– Cultural roots: My family is from Mexico, and I incorporate elements of Mexican culture into my work when it feels right. Whenever I visit, I take photos of the colors, shapes, and textures that are so different from what I see in Montreal.
– Movies & shows: I’m inspired by worldbuilding, art direction, and storytelling in films like Avatar, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, The Mitchells vs. the Machines, The Wild Robot, and Arcane.
– Video games: Titles like Subnautica, Genshin Impact, Wuthering Waves, and Stray, influence my sense of environment design, color, and atmosphere.
– Honorable mentions: Plants vs. Zombies played a huge role in my early love for drawing, and although I never got to play Splatoon, its vibrant colors and character designs definitely shaped my appreciation for bold, expressive palettes.
What is my main specialization?
My main specialization is concept art, especially environment design. Drawing has always been my passion, and concept art lets me turn that passion into a career. While environments are my favorite, I also enjoy creating character concepts and can adapt to a wide range of styles and genres, including fantasy.
I also have experience in environment modeling, which I discovered during my studies and grew to really enjoy. As a third skill, I can work in texturing—it feels very similar to drawing, so I find it both intuitive and fun.
What do I like to do during my free time?
I like to draw in my sketchbook. I always have it in my backpack so whenever I go outside I sometimes sit and start drawing. I wouldn’t say I’m an avid reader, but I like to read artbooks because I love learning about the design process or movies or shows, whether they’re animated or live action.
I like walking. During school hours I sometimes go walking if I have a big break between classes. I started roller blading but I haven’t had time to practice, but I want to get better.
What are my favorite movies or shows and why?
– The Avatar movies for their environments.
– Black Panther Wakanda Forever for the character attires and environments.
– The Mitchells vs the Machines for the story, animation and art style.
– The Wild Robot for the environments and art style.
– Arcane for the art style.
